Trail scores $100K from Canucks and LiUNA Local 1611 for arena upgrades

On Saturday (April 26), the Vancouver Canucks and LiUNA Local 1611 travelled to the Silver City to present a $100,000 cheque to the City of Trail for upgrades to the Trail Memorial Centre, winner of their “Game Changer Reno” contest.

The Canucks “Game Changer Reno” contest is a community initiative run by the Vancouver Canucks, in partnership with LiUNA Local 1611, aimed at supporting small-town and community rinks across British Columbia.

The Canucks and LiUNA select a winner based on the impact renovations would have on the community, such as supporting youth hockey, preserving important community spaces, and improving safety and accessibility.

The donation was celebrated with a special ceremony and free public skating event that brought the community together to mark the significant investment in the future of the facility.

"We are proud to award the Trail Memorial Centre $100,000 for critical upgrades and renovations that will ensure the rink remains a pillar of the community," said Michael Doyle, President, Canucks Sports and Entertainment, Business Operations.

He highlighted the importance of the partnership with LiUNA Local 1611 in investing in local sports infrastructure and youth hockey development across B.C.

Trail Mayor Colleen Jones spoke to the arena’s longstanding role in the community, noting its history as a gathering place for generations of families.

She expressed gratitude to the nominator and to the Canucks and LiUNA for ensuring that future generations can experience the same community pride and opportunities.

Nav Malhotra, Business Manager and Secretary-Treasurer of LiUNA Local 1611, called Trail "arguably the biggest little hard-working Hockey Town in British Columbia," underlining the city’s deep ties to both hockey and hard work.

LiUNA Local 1611 represents thousands of workers across the province in construction, health care support, and other industries.
