Kootenays sizzle: Spring heat shatters temperature records

Residents in six Kootenay communities were left sweating yesterday

Kootenay residents have already taken to local rivers and lakes to cool off.

A record-breaking early heat wave persists this spring, as more temperature highs were set on June 9.

Environment Canada reported new records in 12 municipalities across the Southern Interior, including several from 107 years ago. 

New records: 

• Castlegar
36.4 C (old record of 34.4 C, 1918)

• Cranbrook 
34.4 C (old record of 32.8 C, 1918)

• Creston 
34.8 C (old record of 33.3 C, 1918)

• Nelson 
35.3 C (old record of 33.2 C, 2015)

• Sparwood 
31.4 C (old record of 29.3 C, 2015)

• Trail
36.6 C (old record of 34.3, 2015)

Temperatures also hit new heights throughout the Okanagan in Kelowna, Osoyoos, Penticton, Princeton, Summerland, and Vernon.
