LETTER: Involuntary care helps those who are 'out of control'

Taking away facilities such as Riverview hurt people, this writer says

Editor,

I totally agree with A. Leering's May 22 letter, 'Involuntary care is essential'

People who have grave mental illness suffer along with the rest of us when they are out of control.

We are responsible for the consequences as much as they are, as we took away their right to continuous care and treatment, by closing their homes in the psychiatric hospitals such as Riverview. Many had no resources to house themselves or to seek help when stripped away from the care they had.

I vote to place those with serious mental health issues in a specialized hospital, where they can receive the care and medication needed to keep them and us safe on our streets.
