Editor,
An open letter to Surrey South MLA Trevor Halford and South Surrey-White Rock MP Ernie Klassen:
I am writing to you both as I am in your elector district (White Rock). I humbly request you to use your power to advocate for the lives of 397 ostriches to be spared.
Animals and humans are no different in terms of recovery from a virus. We get sick and we recover and are no longer contagious. The 397 ostriches are not sick. Perhaps five months ago they were, but not any longer.
It is not OK to kill animals like this.
The teen who got avian flu in B.C. and recovered went to the farm to plead for the ostriches. No one killed her when she was sick, or after she recovered.
The cat's of out the bag, so to speak. Avian flu is here, and it will remain.
Viruses are life. It is not OK to "stamp out" any animal, wild or domestic, or any person who becomes infected with a virus.
This is an irreversible action. There is absolutely no justification for the intended actions of the CFIA.
Words like "humane," "depopulation" and "culling" have no relation to the true meaning of what the CFIA is intending.
Go to Katie Pasitney's (daughter of owner Karen) Facebook page.
Look at the eyes of the beautiful ostriches, and you will know what is right. Look at how they enjoy the sunshine, raising their wings, hanging out with each other, being alive. God is relying on humans to have humanity. The lives of the 397 remaining ostriches are not ours to take. We have no right to do such a thing, not if we have any humanity.
Put a stop to this before there is blood on our hands, blood that can never be washed out.
Sandy Alfonso, White Rock
