Rossland museum hits major milestone with $1M grant

Funding brings the museum’s major renovations project to a total of $5 million raised

The Rossland Museum and Discovery Centre has marked a major milestone in its renewal efforts, securing a $1-million grant from the Province of British Columbia through the Rural Economic Diversification and Infrastructure Program (REDIP).

The funding brings the museum’s “Elevate the Rossland Museum and Discovery Centre: Heritage Hub and Economic Catalyst” project to a total of $5 million raised toward its $5.9-million goal.

Staff at the Rossland museum say the REDIP grant is a key boost for a project aimed at expanding year-round programming, enhancing infrastructure, and creating an inclusive, immersive experience that will not only preserve the city's heritage but drive tourism and economic diversification across the region.

“This generous support from the province is a huge step forward for our community and our organization,” said Joelle Hodgins, museum director.

“This investment builds on over a decade of community-driven planning and fundraising. We’re so close to fully realizing this vision and can’t wait to welcome visitors into the renewed museum space next year.”

The multi-phase renewal project promises several major upgrades, including the creation of an immersive Mine Experience designed to bring the area's industrial history to life through interactive exhibits and expanded programming.

Plans also call for a reimagined entranceway, improved accessibility, and flexible indoor and outdoor gathering spaces to better serve both visitors and the community.

"The Rossland Museum is not just a great spot for tourists, but a pillar for the community that preserves important history and facilitates programming in the City of Rossland," said Kootenay-Boundary MLA Steve Morissette.

"I'm grateful our government could support them in continuing to expand their services so their impact can be felt for years to come!"

According to museum staff, the project was one of only 80 initiatives selected for Rural Economic Diversification and Infrastructure Program funding this year, a reflection of its anticipated economic and cultural impact.

They also expressed deep appreciation for the many contributors who have backed the project so far, including Teck Trail Operations, Columbia Basin Trust, BC Arts Council, Heritage BC, the Raymond Gaudert Estate, as well as numerous individual donors, sponsors, and local organizations.

With the final design and early construction phases now underway, the museum continues to seek financial and in-kind support to close the remaining funding gap.

The Rossland Museum and Discovery Centre preserves and presents the history and culture of Rossland and the surrounding region, serving as a gateway to the Kootenays and Columbia Basin through both virtual and real-life exhibits.
