Looking back while looking towards a bright future

Many years ago I stood on a porch with my good friend Sawyer Cairns. On a warm summer’s day, we would fire paint balls into the nearby forest, blissfully unaware of what the future may hold. As time slipped through our fingers, the future became the present, and soon, I found myself standing among the beaming community of Clearwater as they cheered on the 2023 Grads.

The Burkholder/Newton family over the past three years have constructed an earthship on their property in Darfield. An earthship is a sustainable home built from dirt-packed used tires and stacked pop cans. Its hallmarks are passive solar heating, rainwater catchment and sustainable energy use and consumption. The family is now moving into the next phase of their sustainable living plan.
