As reported in last week's Times, TNRD Library System has joined the Read for 15 Challenge.

On Family Literacy Day, Jan. 27, libraries across the Thompson-Nicola Regional District will encourage everyone to read for 15 minutes.

Locally, there will be an event (coffee and light refreshments) at Clearwater Library on Friday, Jan. 27, from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. People can drop in anytime during that period and Read for 15.

Read for 15 was originally developed by Northwest Territories Literacy Council in the early 1990s. It was then was adopted by the libraries in Alberta to promote Family Literacy Day.

Last year, there were 54,000 participants in that province.

This year, the event has been opened up to other provinces to make it a national competition.

The goal of the program is to encourage reading on Family Literacy Day, and to emphasize that all types of reading are valid, whether novels, emails, newspapers, or repair manuals.

Participation is easy. After you finish reading your chosen material for 15 minutes, let the library know. You can use the hashtag #Readfor15TNRD on Facebook or Twitter, or email the library at questions@tnrd.ca. You can also stop by your local TNRD library for a Great Read In program.

All participants will be entered in a draw for a gift card from Chapters.
