The Rotary Club of Chilliwack has announced the winners of its new video contest for youth.

Four students in Grades 6 to 12 won cash prizes after entering the Rotary Climate Change Video Contest this spring.

In the Grade 6 to 8 category, first place went to Willem Acker while Nina Froese won second place. For teens in Grades 9 to 12, Finny Bicycle placed first and Thomas Chirico was second.

The first-place winners will each receive a $300 cash prize, and second-place winners get $200 each.

The Rotary Club of Chilliwack has put together climate-change education kits for kids in Kindergarten to Grade 5 which are in every Chilliwack elementary school library. Rotarians then wanted to bring something similar to middle-school and high-school kids.

"We figured videos would be more appropriate for Grades 6 to 12, so we tried to come up with video ideas for about two years. We learned a couple things about ourselves: we are old (or feel that way); we are no longer cool," Rotarian Robyn Curtis said with a smile.

"So, we decided to change the focus and ask the kids to come up with climate-related videos. They did not disappoint!"

The videos will be shown and prizes awarded during the Rotary meeting on Friday, June 13.
