A video contest for youth will allow students to share their voice about climate change, and give them a chance to win a cash prize.

The Rotary Club of Chilliwack's Climate Change Action Group is hosting its inaugural Climate Change Video Contest for middle- and high-school students in the Chilliwack School District.

The goal is for kids to: learn about climate science, action and solutions; consider how to effectively communicate complex issues; and expand their videography and editing skills.

There are two age groups – middle school (Grades 6 to 8) and high school (Grades 9 to 12) – and two cash prizes for each group. There will be two $300 Rotary awards handed out, and two $200 public choice awards.

The $1,000 for the cash prizes comes from money raised at the Rotary Climate Fair via vendor registrations.

Here are the contest details:

  • The contest is open to middle- and high-school students in the Chilliwack School District
  • There is no limit to the number of videos one individual may submit
  • Orientation: Vertical (9:16 ratio) to fit the Facebook Reels format
  • File format: MP4 or MOV preferred
  • File size: Under 4GB for easy uploading
  • If the student is not experienced at producing videos, they could try free apps like InShot, CapCut, or Canva for simple and effective editing

The deadline is Wednesday, April 30. People can send questions and/or video submissions to: info@rotaryclimatefair.ca.

Details on how the public can vote will be released at a later date.
