A Penticton artist has a painting with a Canadian sovereignty theme.
Jan Crawford’s painting, Preserving the Canadian Maple, features maple leaves in a canning jar.
She said the painting is part of a new series on preserving Canada’s identity.
“From a political shift in alliance with our southern neighbours, an unexpected outcome of shared beliefs and values has emerged with our country becoming united in resolve to defend Canadian identity,” she said.
Crawford, who has been painting for the past three decades, said the leaves in the jar represent Canada's identity with diversity. A single red maple leaf emerging at the top of the jar is the focal point of the painting, she said.
“This painting is an expression of our nationalism and our preserved identity,” she said. “It is critical that all Canadians continue to evolve with freedom of expression, coast to coast.”
The 2018 painting, in acrylic, measures 71 by 97 centimetres.
Crawford is a member of the Federation of Canadian Artists. Her works have been exhibited at Canada House Gallery and Hambleton Galleries.
