The Victoria Police Department has announced the appointment of a third-generation cop as deputy chief constable as the department begins its move to new leadership.

Deputy Chief Michael Brown has been appointed for a one-year term leading the administration division, which includes human resources, information risk management, financial services, executive and legal services, and community engagement, joining Deputy Chief Jamie McRae, who continues to lead operations.

"I really care about our people,” said Brown in a news release. “I want to do everything I can to support their well-being and help them succeed. I am also committed to providing the community with outstanding service, and taking care of our team means they will be able to deliver that service."

Brown has served 30 years with the VicPD, which included tours in patrol, strike force, professional standards, and community services. Most of his career has been served with the Greater Victoria Emergency Response Team as a tactical officer, team leader and critical incident commander.

Most recently, he was the officer in charge of the Esquimalt Division, returning to serve the community where he grew up.

"Deputy Chief Brown has shown exceptional dedication and commitment to both our department and the communities we serve. His career reflects the values we stand for, and he has made a valued contribution to the community in Esquimalt. I am confident that he will take that same success in leadership through to the rest of the department," said VicPD Chief Del Manak.

Manak himself will be saying goodbye to the department at the end of August after eight years as chief. He will be replaced by Vancouver Police Department Deputy Chief Fiona Wilson.
