Human rights have reached many new heights for those identifying under the queer umbrella, but not without struggle.
An opportunity to learn about this struggle in Canada will be presented to residents and visitors of White Rock this Friday, for the South Rock Social Justice film screening of Pride Vs. Prejudice: The Delwin Vriend Story. Vriend took the province of Alberta to court in 1998 over his firing for being gay, with the documentary taking viewers through the case against discrimination in a pursuit for justice.
With June being Pride Month, this film's showing seems to be a good fit for the June 20 showing at White Rock Community Centre.
The film was released in 2024, the 25 year anniversary of the precedent-setting fight that became the bedrock for human rights for 2SLGBTQIA+ people.
Following the screening that kicks off at 6:30 p.m., with doors opening at 6 p.m., will be a question-and-answer on the film's themes. Entry is by donation to the organization with free parking to be available on site.
