Nanaimo Mounties have a high-end mountain bike they believe was stolen and they’d like to see it reunited with its true owner.
The specialized full-suspension mountain bike was seized Tuesday, June 17, from a person who RCMP determined was not the owner, noted a police press release. An officer with Nanaimo RCMP’s special investigations unit, while on patrol on Nicol Street, noticed a person riding a bike that had been spray-painted black.
"Knowing that stolen bikes are often altered, [the officer] stopped and made inquiries with the rider, [who] said someone gave him the bike and he couldn’t explain why it was spray-painted or why someone would give him such an expensive bike," noted the release.
Police have not been able to identify the owner as the bike was not reported stolen nor registered with Project 529 Garage. Nanaimo RCMP will store the bike for 90 days. Anyone who recognizes the bike as theirs is asked to call the Nanaimo RCMP detachment non-emergency line at 250-754-2345.
