Police will help bicycle owners theft-proof their bikes through Nanaimo RCMP detachment's two free Project 529 bike registration events.

Project 529 was created in 2013, and has been used by numerous police agencies as a credible and efficient way to register bikes, reduce bike theft and return stolen bikes to their rightful owners.

The first event happens Saturday, March 8, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., when Nanaimo RCMP Community Policing volunteers will be in front of the Nanaimo detachment at 303 Prideaux St. to register bikes and apply a 529 shield decal to warn potential thieves, or anyone who finds a stolen bike, that it is registered with Project 529.

The second event is set for Saturday, March 29, also 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Nanaimo RCMP detachment.
