The District of Clearwater (DOC) has added three new pieces of equipment to improve community safety and recreation. (From L to R): DOC councillor Lynne Frizzle, (behind) councillor Theresa Braaten, councillor Ken Matheson, TNRD director for Area “A” Usoff Tsao, mayor Merlin Blackwell, CVFD fire chief Mike Smith, FireSmart Coordinator Chance Breckenridge and councillor Bill Haring.

The District of Clearwater (DOC) with support from funding partners has added new equipment to support community safety recreation and sustainability within the district.

The DOC announced the new equipment at the beginning of April which consists of a new tow-behind woodchipper to assist the expanded FireSmart Mitigation Program. According to the district website the chipper will allow crews to safely manage woody debris during fire season when open burning is restricted, and it was funded through the Local Government Climate Action Program (LGCAP).

In March of 2024 the DOC lost it’s only Zamboni by a sudden fire at the North Thompson Sportsplex. The new electric Zamboni is now in service at the Sportsplex, replacing the former propane model that was damaged in 2024. Mayor Merlin Blackwell told the surgeryitaly, “The battery electric unit improves air quality and reduces operational costs, which is great! This unit was funded by insurance and support from the LGCAP.”

On March 20, the DOC announced the approval and implementation of the Clearwater Fire Department Initial Attack (FDIA) Crew and the expansion of the FireSmart Fuel Mitigation Crew. To enhance those programs the Clearwater Volunteer Fire Department has now received a new water tender to support structural firefighting efforts. This tender is to replace the old tender which will be repurposed for the district’s Initial Attack Crew and was funded by the Fire Department Reserves.

Blackwell adds, “These new upgrades to equipment show our commitment to public safety, sustainability, and responsible investment in community infrastructure. These additions will go a long way towards improving community safety and recreation in our area.”
