Youth performing-arts festival takes stage in Chilliwack

An annual performing arts competition featuring talented, young dancers, singers and musicians is now underway in Chilliwack.

The 78th annual Chilliwack Music and Dance Festival runs Feb. 19 to April 4, mainly at the Chilliwack Cultural Centre but also at G. W. Graham Secondary.

The public is welcome to watch and tickets are $7 per session or $25 for a season pass.

Dancing kicks off the festival with ballet on Feb. 19 and 20. That will be followed by contemporary/modern dance Feb. 21 and 22; jazz, lyrical jazz, acro, and street dance Feb. 23 to 26; and tap, stage, plus song and dance Feb. 26 to 28.

Choir performances and master classes are on March 4, while vocals are March 11 and 12.

Piano gets underway on March 5 and continues until March 8; strings, accordion, chamber ensembles, string orchestras and woodwinds are March 10 and 11; and the band performances and master classes are March 10 to 13.

All performances take place at the Chilliwack Cultural Centre, with the exception of the woodwinds and band performances which are at G. W. Graham Secondary.

The festival wraps up with a Dance Honour Performance on March 9 and a Music Honour Performance on April 4. Tickets to the honours performances are $15, and both are at the Chilliwack Cultural Centre.
