LETTERS: Confederate flag is not an olive branch

To the editor,

February is Black History month: a time to reflect on the contributions by as well as the cruelties inflicted on, and the freedoms denied to people of colour.

Science has disproven human races based on skin colour or any criteria. We are one family, equally deserving of the same freedoms, and equally obligated by the same responsibilities of a civil society.

The American Confederate flag is a symbol of the brutal denial of freedoms.

Alexander H. Stephens, vice president of the American Confederacy proclaimed, “The Negro is not equal to the white man.” He declared “Negro slavery to be natural and normal” and the “Confederate government the first in history based on this great moral truth.”

Why then do Canadian Conservative politicians insist our government offer an olive branch to those who fly the American Confederate flag?
