LETTER: What happens when the COVID-19 pandemic winds down?

To the editor,

Over two years back, before the COVID-19 pandemic hit, about 40 of us from this area drove on down past Barriere on a mission.

A couple was on the verge of eviction despite living on their own land. They were residing in a fifth wheel or a travel trailer, and that, according to some Alice in Wonderland Mad Hatter law, was a no no. Out you go.

The police were supposed to arrive that day to evict the couple. Now the question, what would have happened if the police had shown up?

This couple were not the only people threatened with eviction. One of the others, a single mom living on her father’s two acres, was also told to go. All about the province there was this move to evict those living in travel trailers and fifth wheels.

Since COVID-19, this has all died down but once the virus is done, like Dracula emerging from a moldy tomb, it is quite likely this rule from hell will emerge. What then?

So why was I cheering on the police in Ottawa while they were clearing out the horn honkers and hot tubbers from that area around the Parliament buildings, as I’ve been on the other side of that line more than once in my lifetime?

During the anti-NFTAA, at the time when thousands were converging on Quebec City, there were fears expressed by some that we would cause much destruction. Smash Quebec City up, one might say.

Well, none of that happened. We were careful not to trod on the resident’s toes and on the main we were greeted warmly. During the big march through Quebec City, people blew horns and waved at us.

Now contrast this to the horn-honkers who managed to alienate the people of Ottawa who in turn formed counter demonstrations. Three weeks and counting, talk about a lesson in what not to do with a demonstration. No wonder Trudeau had to bring in the Emergencies Act, and be cheered on by many of us who normally wouldn’t do so.
