To the editor,

I was inspired to see the level of energy and organization displayed in the Jan. 29, 2022, demonstrations against vaccine mandates. Too bad it was so utterly misguided.

Otherwise intelligent people so addicted to the nonsense on the internet regarding the topic of vaccination. The focus is on the less than one per cent of adverse reactions due to vaccination. The harm done by this twisted point of view is very far-reaching.

Unvaccinated people make up the majority of hospital admissions, meaning that thousands of other critical procedures have been cancelled as a result. The added strain on medical staff, hospitals and our health care system is huge.

This so-called freedom protest is being backed by the likes of Maxime Bernier, leader of the People’s Party of Canada, and a number of Mr. O’Toole’s Conservative members, anything for a political advantage.

Here in Clearwater, I was witness to the blocking of Highway 5 at the roundabout by two pickup trucks to allow the parade of protesters free and unobstructed passage through the roundabout for 15 to 20 minutes. Many of these same protesters will ask for Indigenous persons who block road access to be locked up. I wonder how many of these so-called freedom protesters even bothered to vote in the last election?

In my opinion, the greatest threat to our democracy is the distorted information that circulates freely on the internet. There are good sources of information that have scientific proving, but they are often drowned out by the torrent of false and misleading claims, with little or no backing of scientific proof.

Well there, I got if off my chest. I am still a proud Canadian, just disappointed in some of the views and actions of my fellow citizens.

Wes Morden,

Blackpool, B.C.
