The Freshwater Fisheries Society of B.C. is inviting Greater Trail families to participate in the Family Fishing Weekend at Champion Lakes near Fruitvale on Father’s Day.
Every year Family Fishing Weekend provides residents with a chance to enjoy outdoor adventure in their own backyard and potentially get hooked on freshwater fishing.
“More British Columbians are planning summer adventures at home and looking to discover amazing experiences in the province,” said Stacy Webb, the society's director of marketing and communications.
"Family Fishing Weekend is a great place to start, or continue, that exploration.”
In addition to Champion Lake, events are also planned in other locations across the Kootenays.
Lake Lilian in Invermere will see Family Fishing Day on June 14, Upper Arrow Lake in Nakusp at the marina the same day, and Idlewild Park in Cranbrook on June 15.
Anglers of all levels can attend, and for that weekend only, fishing licenses are not required.
Anglers, however, are required to follow provincial fishing regulations regarding quotas, tackle, conservation surcharges, and classified waters.
Those participants new to angling or looking for a refresher will have an opportunity to learn the subtleties of the sport from experienced anglers.
The events provide hands-on instruction as well as loaner rods, reels, and tackle.
Some will also include fishing clinics, fly-tying clinics, stream clean-up projects, and fishing derbies.
Fishing is gaining in popularity, says Jenna Merth, the society's outreach coordinator.
“The number of fishing licenses sold have increased across all age groups since 2020-21, as people explore freshwater fishing while seeking activities close to home.
“Sales have increased 25 per cent for ages 16-25,” Merth added.
Family Fishing Weekend is designed to help individuals learn more about the peaceful pastime and connect with the angling community.
Residents from Rossland, Warfield, Trail, Montrose and Fruitvale, and surrounding communities like Salmo, Nelson and Castlegar are encouraged to attend.
The event runs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Third Lake of Champion Lakes Provincial Park on Sunday, June 15.
Details for other sites are available on the Family Fishing Weekend page (bcfamilyfishing), gofishbc.com, and the Fisheries and Oceans website.
The Freshwater Fisheries Society was created in 2003 as a private, not-for-profit organization, funded through freshwater fishing licence revenues.
In partnership with the province, the society annually stocks six million trout, char and kokanee in 800 B.C. lakes.
It also manages hatchery programs, engages in fishery research, and promotes education and conservation programs. It also strives to make fishing more accessible and fun for all.
