(L-R) Grace Lindsey and Laura Belanger-Ihlen will lead this year's summer reading program at the Castlegar Library.

The Castlegar and District Library’s summer reading program is gearing up for a summer of fun.

The BC Summer Reading Club is a free reading program for children. It is a great way to improve reading skills, meet new friends, learn more about your community, and have fun.

The program will be focused around this year’s theme: Colour Your Summer!  Kids across BC will follow authors to explore their creative and colourful sides. From art, to history, to nature, and beyond.

Participants do more than just read books — they play games, make arts and crafts and participate in science experiments. Special guests will also give children insightful presentations during the program.

"Encouraging children to read during the summer months is not always an effortless task, but by exploring thrilling activities, crafts, science experiments, games and themes we hope to make reading a more enjoyable part of a child's summer vacation," says the program's local coordinators Grace Lindsey and Laura Belanger-Ihlen.

The program coordinators can also tailor the program to suit each child’s needs and recommend books specifically for them.

The program is for children in preschool through grade 4+. But you do not need to be enroled in a school to join — homeschoolers are welcome.

Registration opens on June 18. Children should be registered under the grade they will complete in June 2025.

The program begins the week of June 30 and ends the week of August 11. Children must be at least three years old as of June 2025 and be potty trained to participate.
