Vernon rowers rack up gold medals at provincial competition

The Vernon Rowing and Dragon Boat Club members won four gold medals at the event in Shawnigan Lake.

Vernon rowers brought their best at the Shawnigan Lake School regatta, coming home with four gold medals.

The Vernon Rowing and Dragon Boat Club (VRDBC) members were up against over 550 boats on the 2,000-metre course on Vancouver Island, with six crews from Vernon.

The U19 mixed double crew of Cole O’Connor and Sierra Munroe crossed the finish line first at 7:34, leaving their closest opponent trailing by 12 seconds.

Both athletes are joining university rowing programs in the fall. Munroe has been recruited by the University of Rhode Island, and O’Connor will be staying closer to home at the University of Victoria. The duo will be joining five more VRDBC alumni, who are currently rowing in university teams.

O'Connor also captured a bronze medal in the U19 men's singles race, which was one of the most competitive events.

Another duo, Peter Masys and Leo Middelkamp, won gold in the U17 varsity double event, beating their second-ranked opponents by two seconds.

Middelkamp also made the U17 men's singles B final, finishing just off the podium in fourth.
