Construction sites are often targeted by thieves because of the increased chance of finding valuable tools and building materials. Often, there is inadequate security on these sites which is why they are appealing.

Here are a few helpful hints:

• In order to minimize the amount of time materials are left unattended, monitor delivery dates so that materials or appliances are installed soon after delivery.

• Know employees and be watchful for suspicious behavior.

• Designate one person to lock up and all collect and secure all tools at the end of the day.

• Mark tools with appropriate markings to easily identify recovered property.

• Use an anti-theft company policy where if tools are stolen, grounds for dismissal exist.

• Install temporary fencing to deter trespassers and thieves.

• Use a trailer as a secure storage unit to take to and from the jobsite.

• Speak with neighbors and ask for their help in keeping an eye out.

Theft of construction equipment is a big business and popular within the Thompson and Okanagan Valleys. Equipment with a "one-key-fits-all" ignition makes it simple for an experienced thief to be loaded and gone within a short period of time. Chains and padlocks should be used where required as an appropriate deterrent to thieves.
