Local youth and athletes are gearing up for a new level of racing as they take to the snowy trails of Silver Star Mountain.
The FatShoe Duathlon debuts Jan. 11 at Vernon's ski hill for enthusiasts of all ages.
Dawna Jodoin, ultra runner, coach, and founder of Bush Babes and Bros Trail Running, has created FatShoe for winter enthusiasts to explore 5.5 kilometres of snowshoe and 11 kms of fatbike winter trails.
Fatshoe is for solo or a team of two.
Among the day’s highlights is the Kids’ Two Kilometre Snowshoe Loop, a family-friendly event designed to inspire young adventurers to embrace winter fun.
The loop is a non-competitive trek for $10 per child, with parents or guardians are welcome to join their kids for free, making this an ideal family outing.
Event starts at 12:30 p.m. and you must have your own snowshoes.
After the snowshoe, everyone is invited to gather around a campfire to enjoy hot chocolate, s’mores and music.
“This event is all about encouraging kids to get outside, try something new, and experience the beauty of snowshoeing,” said Jodoin. “It’s fun, easy, and a wonderful way for families to enjoy the outdoors together.”
The duathlon is part of Jodoin's series of trail events in Vernon for 2025.
“We are thrilled to offer these diverse events that will push athletes to their limits while embracing the beauty of Vernon’s incredible outdoors,” said Jodoin. “Whether you’re trail running, fat biking, or snowshoeing, our events provide the perfect opportunity to challenge yourself and enjoy the trails with a community of passionate outdoor enthusiasts.”
Following FatShoe, Bush Babes returns to Silver Star for Slay the Dragon June 21.
Brokenagan takes place at Sovereign Lake Nordic Centre July 26.
Freaky Creeky runs Kalamalka Provincial Park Sept. 20.
The Soup2Nutz Duathlon has been postponed to 2026.
"I’m dedicated to fostering a sense of community and adventure through these events," adds Jodoin. "Whether you’re a seasoned athlete or new to the trails, we welcome everyone to join us and experience the joy and challenge of trail running and winter sports."
