LETTER: How did the Church Avenue resident cross the road? With difficulty

Church Avenue residents who want to cross Shelbourne Street safely must walk to Cedar Hill Cross Road.

Church Avenue runs for two blocks between Shelbourne and Cedar Hill Road, with Shelbourne Plaza at the bottom of the hill. It’s the most densely populated two blocks between Derby and Cedar Hill Cross Road.

There are 189 residences for ages 55+ on one block, including the new apartments on Cedar Hill Road, which have little or no parking, as well as four apartment blocks on the north side of Church, housing an unknown number of Saanich residents.

So if Shelbourne Plaza shoppers living on Church want to cross busy Shelbourne Street safely, they must walk two blocks out of their way to Cedar Hill Cross Road, one block there and back.

There are brand new lights on Shelbourne at almost every corner between North Dairy and Pear Street — servicing a significantly less densely populated area — but none at Church Avenue.

Why have the folks at Saanich Planning Department forgotten about the Church Avenue residents?
