It’s the time of year when the library gears up for the Summer Reading Club and this year we have lots of activities planned for our Summer Reading kids.
This year’s theme is “Colour Your Summer” with weekly events and programs reflecting different aspects of that theme. They include “Growing Green,” where we’ll plant flowers and watch them grow all summer long, to “Indi-GO,” when we’ll team up with our wonderful local museum for a field trip packed with fun and discovery.
The BC Summer Reading Club is a free literacy program designed to engage school-aged children, ages 5 to 14, with libraries and reading, throughout the summer. We strive to do so in a way that is fun, educational, and community-oriented.
Summer Reading Club welcomes the participation of all children and their families, and seeks to provide an accessible and fully inclusive program.
It is sponsored by the British Columbia Library Association and the local library, along with generous assistance from the Public Libraries Branch, Ministry of Housing and Municipal Affairs, and CUPE BC.
Registration at the Creston Valley Public Library begins on June 3 with programs beginning the week of July 8.
The schedule for our weekly sessions is:
• Tuesdays, 1:30 to 3 p.m. = Primary kids (going into Grades 1-2)
• Wednesdays 10:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. = Intermediate (going into grades 3-4)
• Fridays, 10:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. = Tweens (going into grades 5-8)
As always, the Summer Reading Club is free to all participants but space is limited, so be sure to come and register in person at the library as soon as you can.
Each summer our program fills up quickly with 60 to 70 eager readers joining us each week. Kids enjoy hands-on activities, games, reading challenges, and plenty of chances to make new friends in our vibrant and welcoming space.
Some questions we always get include:
Can I still participate if I’ll be going away on holidays?
Yes! If you’re only going to be away for short parts of the summer, you can still sign up for in-person sessions for the times you’ll be in town. If you’re going to be away for most of the summer you can sign up for the reading tracker package or the reading challenges and do your reading on your own to get your medal at the end of the summer. You don’t have to attend any of our in-person programs to take part in the Summer Reading Club.
What books do I have to read to take part?
You can read what you like! Libraries really want you to enjoy and love the books you read so we want you to pick your favourites. We recommend reading at least 15 minutes a day, each day of summer to reach your Summer Reading goal and get your medal, but what you choose to read is up to you. If you’re feeling like that’s too easy for you, you can also sign up for our “How Many Minutes Can You Read?” summer reading challenge and earn extra prizes at the end of the summer!
You can also check out our weekly puzzle in the children's area each week and all the new summer books to read. We extend our gratitude to the participating local businesses — their sponsorship helps make all the fun, learning, and creativity possible each summer.
We’ll see you at the library this summer!
