Welcome aboard The Goodship Castlegar Arts Council for the maiden voyage as a column in Castlegar News! The CAC captain and crew are grateful to be given this media opportunity to augment artful journeys within our community.

By way of this column, each of our council’s board members will address current art event information, offer inspirational art news and reviews as well as links to access artistic paths and processes.

The CAC’s historic and ongoing task is to source, present and cultivate creative opportunity and enrichment to our community.

Former CAC president, during the late 1970s, Judy Wearmouth indicated, “We had a good board. In order to bring artists into our area we attended Pacific Contact Arts Expo. We booked, among others, Bim, Ferron and a Russian circus. We also created a talent show with local performers.”

The CAC’s recent focus and achievements include building a strong board and forming supportive partnerships within the community. Film nights at Castle Theatre, workshops to expand and express creative energy, drawing nights at local pubs and organization of our annual Castlegar Artwalk are some of our occupations.

We’re also on the lookout for artists with workshop proposals, folks interested in volunteering with CAC, event ideas and businesses looking to partner with the council for events.

A recent survey regarding artist studio workspace was created with results indicating the need for, and lack of, space available for artists.

The CAC meets monthly so our board is always addressing current issues and maintaining engagement with ongoing assignments.
