Clearwater RCMP responded to 33 calls for service this past week, including an uninsured vehicle incident, a deer disappearing after being hit by an Alberta driver and an intoxicated male removed from a CN passenger train by police.
On Thursday, Nov. 14 at 7:41 p.m, Clearwater RCMP received a call from a local woman advising a gold PT Cruiser had crashed into the trees near her residence the night before around 9:30 p.m. Sgt. Grant Simpson, detachment commander for the Clearwater RCMP said, “They heard tires screeching and saw headlights, but then they disappeared, and they simply thought the vehicle had taken the corner near their home too fast. In the morning they saw the vehicle in the trees.”
Const. Van Woudenberg and Sgt. Simpson attended and noted no plate on the back of the vehicle. The VIN was run, and the vehicle is registered to another local woman. Photos of the scene were taken and added to the file. A local tow company attended and removed the vehicle to their tow yard.
Simpson reports, “Const. Van Woudenberg called the registered owner to check on her for any injury and issued a violation ticket to her for no insurance and fail to remain at the scene of accident. She initially tried to imply it was stolen, but when warned about public mischief and its implications, she stated she didn't want to report it and accepted the violation ticket. Damage to the vehicle is minimal.”
On Friday, Nov.15 at 7:05 p.m, Clearwater RCMP received a call from an Edmonton man advising he had just hit a deer on Highway 5 in Blackpool.
Simpson said, “The deer was lying in the middle of the highway and needed to be dispatched. The complainants Alberta registered vehicle, a Mitsubishi Outlander, was not drivable. Const. Van Woudenberg attended, and the deer was gone on his arrival at the scene. The complainant advised it had gotten up and departed into the woods, seeming to be ok. There was damage conducive to hitting a deer visible on the passenger side bumper.” The vehicle pulled onto the dirt portion of the shoulder and the complainant arranged his own tow/recovery truck. Const. Van Woudenberg provided him a ride into Clearwater to make the necessary arrangements for a tow/recovery. No accident report required as damage under $10,000.
Sgt. Simpson reports that on Sat., Nov.16 at 12:55 p.m., Clearwater RCMP received a call from CN police, advising of an intoxicated middle-aged male onboard their rail line. They were asking for assistance in having him removed. The train would be arriving in Blue River within 25 minutes of the call. At 1:33 p.m., Const. Van Woudenberg received the call. Contact was made with the rail crew and arrangements were made to meet at the rail line in Clearwater. They provided the male's name and that he was approximately 50 years old. Simpson said, “On arrival, Const. Van Woudenberg entered the train and was taken to the male. He reeked of liquor and couldn't answer simple questions. The London, Ontario man was arrested for Causing Disturbance and being Intoxicated in a public place, removed from the train along with his belongings, transported to Clearwater detachment and lodged in cells there, until sober. There was no photo ID found, but the male provided his details. Const. Van Woudenberg released the now sober male the following morning at 8:35 a.m. and provided a ride to a local hotel for him to arrange his own transport out of Clearwater.
