Police Report: Carpet scammers asked to leave

Police in Clearwater remind the public to watch for contracting scams, in particular those targeting the elderly

Police in Clearwater remind the public to watch for contracting scams, in particular those targeting the elderly.

On Sunday, June 5, a crew of three males arrived at Evergreen Acres seniors' complex and started to solicit customers for their carpet cleaning business. The building's maintenance man was notified by a resident and arrived to investigate, having had no knowledge of the crew's arrival.

Earlier in the day, the crew had been seen driving the parking lot in a Blue Ford Taurus.

Police arrived on scene to calm an escalating situation and kindly asked the crew to leave the building and carry on home before the customers lost their money. The crew is associated to a number of recent suspicious occurrences in complexes in and around the Kamloops area.

The public is asked to keep watch and to ask questions when suspicious contractors show up looking for business. A legitimate business should be able to provide a legitimate business license. Beware of smooth talkers and businesses from out of town and remember that a good deal can always wait.
