Mounties in Quesnel arrested a man who they say fled from police during a traffic stop.

On May 20 at 7:36 p.m., the RCMP attempted a traffic stop on a pickup truck on Front Street. The driver of the vehicle, 27-year-old Kyle Fredrick Ford, fled from police, an RCMP news release said. Mounties did not pursue the vehicle out of concern for public safety.

Less than two hours later, officers found the vehicle in the area of Sundown Road. The release says they used a spike belt to attempt to stop the vehicle from fleeing again and prevent the driver from endangering the public.

Ford did attempt to flee and avoided the spike belt, but collided with two RCMP vehicles, the news release adds. Both vehicles were severely damaged and one officer received minor injuries, Mounties say. The collision caused the vehicle to be disabled and while the driver attempted to flee on foot, police apprehended him. A 20-year-old woman was a passenger in the vehicle and was released without charges.

Ford has been charged with impaired operation of a motor vehicle, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle and operating a motor vehicle while being pursued by police. The investigation is ongoing and Mounties believe the vehicle may have been stolen.
