The Clearwater Volunteer Fire Department welcomed the community to the fire hall on Village Road for the annual Fire Prevention Open House and Barbecue on Thursday, Oct. 10. The free barbecue was sponsored by the newly-appointed FireSmart coordinator, Chance Breckenridge.
Following the barbecue guests received some “hands-on” experience using a fire extinguisher and hose while the highlight of the evening was the demonstration of how quickly cedar hedges against a structure can burn. The cedars burned fast and hot, a jolting display of how the embers can fly while on fire. The demonstration was meant to show how cedars can become “fire starters” up to two kilometres away if the wind conditions are right during the hot summer months.
District of Clearwater councillor, Ken Matheson attended the barbecue and open house and was impressed with the demonstrations. He said, "I urge everyone to FireSmart their homes. Taking small, proactive steps now not only protects your property but helps safeguard your neighbours as well. We are all in this together-let’s make Clearwater a Firesmart community!"
“We really enjoyed connecting with the community and received a lot of positive feedback," Breckenridge said. "This event concluded the Fire Prevention Week for us. We ask residents to please check your smoke alarms to make sure you have installed them correctly, have a sufficient quantity for your living space and test them to be sure they are all functioning. Working smoke alarms save lives!”
The evening was accentuated by the Northern Lights display making an appearance to make the event even more “memorable” added Breckenridge.
“We want to thank everyone that came out for such a great event once again. We really appreciate such fantastic community spirit.”
