A report of vagrancy in a Clearwater hotel led to the arrest of a man wanted for an outstanding warrant.
This incident was one of 27 Clearwater RCMP responded to last week and took place on Wednesday, April 30. Sgt. G.D. Simpson said a staff member contacted RCMP and advised them that a vagrant had been using the shower in the hotel's pool area and eating a free breakfast without being a customer of the hotel.
"Clearwater members attended the business and met with the employee who advised that he believed he had found the unknown individual's name, providing it to police as the possible offender, through an email login on one of the public computers in the hotel the male had been using," Simpson said. "Clearwater RCMP conducted a records check, which revealed the male had an unendorsed warrant from Golden, B.C and confirmed his identity through a picture on the computer records database, which also matched social media checks."
After identifying the suspect, Simpson said officers conducted a patrol of the area and located a male matching the suspect's description riding a bicycle without a helmet along Eden Road. Officers stopped the individual for riding without a helmet and confirmed his identity using a prior mugshot. Simpson said the man was then arrested for the unendorsed warrants and held for a Judicial Justice of the Peace hearing.
Following the hearing, the individual was released on conditions and his effects were returned to him. Cst. Maibauer updated the original complainant on the outcome via voicemail.
RCMP respond to rollover near Vavenby
On Saturday, May 3, Cst. Gill of the Provincial Support Team was dispatched to assist an ambulance at a single-vehicle collision north of Vavenby on Hwy 5.
Simpson said a passerby from Alberta had come across the rollover and called an ambulance. On arrival, Gill located the driver being tended by BC Emergency Health Services as he sat on the ground.
"The driver, an Edmonton man, provided a valid Alberta driver’s license. He advised that he was the owner of the damaged 2001 Toyota Corolla," Simpson explained. "The car was 15 feet off the highway. The driver/owner stated he looked back to reach into his cooler for some food when his vehicle hit gravel and he lost control."
The man told Gill he had been travelling to 70 Mile House for a new job at the time of the incident. Simpson said that Gill noticed no signs of impairment by drugs or alcohol. After talking with the driver, the vehicle was taped off and the driver taken to the Dr. Helmcken Memorial Hospital in Clearwater, though Gill noticed no serious injuries.
Vehicle towed after going down embankment
A woman from Sun Peaks requested a tow for a black Honda CRV that went off the road near Wells Grey Park on Monday, April 28.
Simpson said Cpl. McGeorge responded to the incident but was unable to obtain further details from the call. McGeorge attended the scene of the incident and found that the Honda had been travelling northbound into Wells Grey Park when it failed to negotiate a left-hand turn, going down a small soft embankment and coming to rest on its passenger side door in a small ditch.
"No occupants were found, no sign of any injuries, and no airbag deployed," Simpson said.
After contacting the towing company, McGeorge was informed that the owner, a 43-year-old woman from Vancouver, had contacted them requesting a tow. No further police involvement was required.
