A new roundabout, set to be installed in a major Vernon roadway, is part of the city's new 'roundabout-first policy.'

Preliminary work is being done to install the roundabout at the Pleasant Valley Road and 39th Avenue intersection.

The city recently submitted a Request for Proposal (RFP) for the roundabout, which closed Oct. 2. The project was originally scheduled to begin in 2024, but has since been postponed to spring of 2025.

Josh Winquist, communications manager for the city, explained the reason for the prioritization of roundabouts.

"It's part of a broader, long-term plan to improve traffic flow and safety along Pleasant Valley Road," he said. "This intersection, as well as others along Pleasant Valley Road, has been part of a plan for gradual conversion to roundabouts since 2010."

Along with the two existing PV Road roundabouts, there is another on 30th and 31st avenues and the double roundabout at 39th Avenue and 30th Street.

"The city follows roundabout-first policy, which prioritizes roundabouts where feasible," said Winquist. "This policy is based on their proven ability to reduce speeds and prevent severe collisions, such as T-bone and head-on crashes, which are more common at traditional intersections. Roundabouts also enhance traffic efficiency by keeping vehicles moving steadily without the need for stop signs or traffic lights."

Winquist acknowledged that there is "a bit" of a learning curve with roundabouts, but said that the city will continue to share information and resources to help residents feel "more confident" while navigating them.
