Rideshare company Uber is now available in Penticton and Summerland.

Rideshare giant Uber is rolling into Penticton and Summerland.

The app is now available to all British Columbians but rides will only be available where drivers actively sign up and go online to do trips, the company said in a press release on May 28.

In an email to Black Press, an Uber Canada spokesperson confirmed that drivers have already signed up to work in Penticton and Summerland.

"Ride availability may vary depending on the number of drivers in that area, but we’ll be growing every day and always looking for more to join the road," it added.

As of May 29, it remains unclear if drivers have signed up for Uber in other South Okanagan communities.

Uber joins Uride as rideshare services to operate in Penticton and Summerland.

The California-based company operates in more than 140 Canadian municipalities and around 10,000 cities globally.

It launched in Vancouver in 2020, before coming to other B.C. cities like Kelowna and Victoria in 2023.

Now province-wide, Uber says it is looking forward to welcoming more drivers on board.

The company added that it is currently offering a $500 incentive for eligible drivers who create a profile and take 10 trips within the first four weeks.

More information signing up as a driver can be found here.

“As we head into a busy summer season, we are excited to bring rideshare to more British Columbians," said Michael van Hemmen, general manager of Uber Canada.
