Surrey's Filipino community is inviting the community to another vigil in support of the victims and survivors of the Lapu Lapu Festival tragedy.

Eleven people were killed – seven women, two men, one non-binary person and a five-year-old girl – and at least two dozen more were injured, ranging in age from 22 months old to 60 years old, when a person drove an SUV through the crowd at the Vancouver festival on Saturday, April 26.

Another prayer vigil is being held on Sunday, May 10 from 5 to 9 p.m. at the fountain in Holland Park (13428 Old Yale Rd.). Organizers encourage people to bring a picnic chair, flowers, and a candle. Condolence books will be available to sign.

The City of Surrey also has books of condolences available to sign until 4 p.m. on May 9 at the following locations:

  • Chuck Bailey Recreation Centre (13458 107A Ave.)
  • Cloverdale Recreation Centre (6188 176 St.)
  • Guildford Recreation Centre (15105 105 Ave.)
  • Newton Recreation Centre (13730 72 Ave.)
  • Fleetwood Recreation Centre (15996 84 Ave.)
  • South Surrey Recreation Centre (14601 20 Ave.)
  • Fraser Heights Recreation Centre (10588 160 St.)
  • Clayton Community Centre (7155 187a St.)
  • Museum of Surrey (17710 56a Ave).

The books will be presented to Filipino B.C.

Surrey Philippine Independence Day Society previously hosted a vigil at Our Lady of Good Counsel Church on April 27.

The organizations Anakbayan BC & Surrey, Migrante BC, Canada-Philippines Solidarity for Human Rights, and Gabriela BC then helped organize a vigil at Holland Park (13428 Old Yale Road) on April 30. Later in the week, many of the same organizations came together to pack care packages for Filipino first responders.

B.C. recently declared May 2 a provincial day of remembrance and mourning for victims of tragedy at the Lapu Lapu Day Festival. Several Catholic Churches throughout the Lower Mainland also held memorial masses on Friday (May 2) and over the following weekend for the victims of the tragedy.

Charged with second-degree murder

Kai-Ji Adam Lo, who is facing eight counts of second-degree murder, was ordered to have an in-custody assessment during a court appearance on Friday in Vancouver provincial court.

The court has allowed media to publicly report on the psychiatric assessment; however, the basis for the assessment and why it's necessary, or where it will happen, remains under a publication ban.
