Parking could be at a premium for the upcoming Salmon Arm Demo Derby and Swap Meet at the city fairgrounds.

At its May 27 meeting, city council received a request from the local Girl Guides of Canada asking for permission to use the field at 5th Avenue and 3rd Street SW (Safeway fields) for parking during the June 15-16 event.

City engineering and public works director Rob Niewenhuizen said it had been determined by staff that putting cars on the field right now “would actually be detrimental to the practice soccer fields.”

Mayor Alan Harrison noted the field would be in use for soccer that weekend.

“We all want to support that event of course, but we can’t play soccer around the cars so they’ll have to do something different,” said Harrison.

The demolition derby/swap meet event, hosted by Twisted Auto Recycling and the White Post Auto Museum, will be held rain or shine, and will include celebrity guests, beer gardens, food trucks, a silent auction and more. For information and tickets, visit derbyswap.ca.
