Sicamous has asked the Columbia Shuswap Regional District (CSRD) for an official service review of local recreation centre management after being unable to make headway in discussions to take on responsibility of the function.
Increasingly dissatisfied with the management of the rec centre, council directed Mayor Colleen Anderson to introduce a motion at the Dec. 13 CSRD board meeting to discuss having the district take over responsibility for the local facility, which is owned by the regional district.
“District of Sicamous council feels that the needs of the community and area are not being met regarding the management and operation of the Sicamous & District Recreation Centre," she said at the Dec. board meeting. "The district has met with the user groups, listened to their concerns raised in these discussions and developed a summary of these concerns as well as providing recommendations on how to address these concerns.”
She added that district staff had been "under clear direction" from council to undertake an informal review but haven't been successful in moving discussions forward to address concerns.
Anderson made the motion to negotiate taking over administration of the rec centre, which would have been a weighted vote for herself and Area E director Rhona Martin, but it died on the table as it didn't get a second mover.
"I've been given a mandate from my council that should my motion today not be supported, the District of Sicamous has no option other than to provide a letter to the CSRD board and the Ministry of Municipal Affairs requesting statutory service review of the operation and management of the Sicamous & District Recreation Centre,” Anderson informed the board after her motion failed to make it to the floor for discussion.
She added the letter would be received by Dec. 17.
