Sicamous council is sniffing around the possibility of having a small, in-town dog park for pet owners who are unable to access the main one across Highway 1.
At the Dec. 11 meeting, council received a letter from Lorri Chmilar requesting that an area in the Lions Park be designated for paw patrol. She pointed out that a lot of seniors and those unable to drive walk their dogs on local paths and sidewalks but "many feel the trails are not safe with the e-bikes, bikes and joggers.”
Coun. Siobhan Rich liked the idea and suggested staff investigate the possibility but said they might have to limit sizes due to the small area of Lions.
“I would think that it would have to be a small dog dog park that there’s a height, for the dogs, not the people, regulation,” she said with a laugh. “But it may be something we can look into.”
Operations manager Darrell Symbaluk said that while it is a bit limited for space there, he could see what might fit and bring some cost estimates to the January budget meeting.
Coun. Pam Beech supported looking at options, particularly in the area which is in close proximity to the senior’s centre and housing.
“We do need something in that area,” she agreed. “We’ve got a lot of seniors and they need to have their pets, it’s important.”
Acknowledging that this matter has come to the table in the past, council directed staff to bring back more information on a small, off-leash area at the Lions Park.
