Castlegar City Council has decided to set aside a portion of Kinnaird Park for the creation of a disc golf course.
A delegation from the Kootenay Rockies Disc Golf Society approached city council earlier this year to request space to create an 18 hole course in the city. The group indicated that they would raise the money necessary to pay for the needed equipment to create the course.
Disc golf has been gaining popularity in recent years across the region with courses in Rossland, Oasis, Fruitvale, Nelson and other communities. The game is easy to learn and affordable compared to many sports because the necessary equipment – both to create a course and to play the game – is minimal.
After considering several locations including areas near Grandview Heights, the West Kootenay Regional Airport and Millennium Park, Kinnaird Park was chosen as the ideal location for a number of reasons including existing topography and trails, washroom facilities and parking access.
The motion is scheduled for approval at the Jan. 13, 2025 council meeting. After that, the next steps will see city staff continuing to work with the disc golf society to collaborate on a pre-project application and complete an internal referral process to establish project requirements. The project will need to align with city standards, industry best practices and look at environmental impacts.
Later stages will include final planning and design work as well as a formal agreement outlining technical requirements, roles/responsibilities, long-term asset management and financial contribution. This will be presented to council for final approval.
