Firefighters were called out to a fire on the ninth floor of an apartment building in Chilliwack.
The blaze happened just before 5 p.m. on Saturday, May 3 in an 11-storey building on Mary Street near Patten Avenue.
Black smoke could be seen coming from the patio doors of one of the units and flames inside the unit were also visible.
"Crews quickly mobilized and simultaneously established a water supply, advanced hose streams to extinguish the fire and assisted several residents in evacuating the building," assistant fire chief Chris Wilson stated in a May 7 press release.
One occupant of the building was transported to hospital with smoke inhalation.
Firefighters on scene stated they were "protecting in place" and not evacuating the entire building. This approach is often used when evacuation is unsafe or impractical.
Within about half an hour, the fire was reportedly out.
"Despite a well-established fire upon arrival, crews were able to successfully limit the fire damage to a single unit, thanks to the swift and effective tactics employed by fire crews and the concrete construction of the apartment building," Wilson said. "After the fire was extinguished crews organized a systematic re-entry of the building for unaffected residents."
Approximately 35 firefighters from Halls 1 and 4 responded to the scene. There were no firefighter injuries reported at this fire.
The Chilliwack Emergency Support Services team was dispatched to the scene and provided immediate unmet needs support to the displaced occupant.
This fire is currently under investigation by fire officials and is not considered to be suspicious at this time.
