“The financial institution is investigating, and the resident has taken steps to enhance cybersecurity,” says Oak Bay PD.

The Oak Bay Police Department is warning the public to be cautious of unsolicited calls after a resident was defrauded over the phone.

An Oak Bay local reported being swindled earlier this month after someone claiming to be from a financial institution gave them a ring.

According to the police, the caller directed the resident to a fraudulent website, resulting in unauthorized withdrawals from two bank accounts.

“The financial institution is investigating, and the resident has taken steps to enhance cybersecurity,” the police department said in a news release.

Oak Bay PD added that the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre is a valuable resource for people looking to stay abreast of common fraud tactics and scams.
