Regional District of North Okanagan reminds residents of Electoral Areas B and C that open burning season starts Oct. 31, and that Class A open fire remain prohibited.

Residents in Regional District North Okanagan (RDNO) Electoral Areas B (Swan Lake-Commonage) and C (BX-Silver Star) are reminded that open burning for their areas does not start until Halloween, Thursday, Oct. 31.

The BC Wildfire Service rescinded prohibitions on Category 2 open fires and S. 12 equipment and activities throughout the Kamloops Fire Centre on Wednesday, Sept. 18. To stay aligned with provincial regulations, the RDNO rescinded restrictions on Class B open fires for Electoral Areas B and C, as they are not included in the Kamloops Fire Centre notice.

"Residents in Electoral Areas B and C are reminded that an Open Burning Permit is required for any Class B open burns," said the RDNO in a release. "Those conducting open fires should use caution and be aware of local conditions that might impact their ability to burn safely and control their open fires."

Class 'B' Open Burning" means open burning of debris piles equal to or less than three meters in diameter and two meters in height that do not result from land cleared or partially cleared of vegetation to help prepare the land for a different use.

Class A open fires remain prohibited throughout the RDNO and refers to a fire that:

• is greater than 2.5 acres;

• does not exceed 10 metres in diameter;

• is used for the purpose of clearing vegetation to prepare land for non-farming use;

• burns for a maximum of three consecutive days.

Anyone who lights an open fire must also comply with British Columbia’s air quality control legislation. Check the local venting index by calling 1-888-281-2992 or visit http://ow.ly/q2jC50Ln0WL.
