Students at Delview Secondary are hosting a community carnival on Tuesday (June 3) to raise funds for the Canadian Cancer Society.
The event is open to the public and coincides with the the school's Relay For Life, which will see close to 400 students from Delview and nearby Gibson Elementary attend and take part in the national fundraiser.
On from 4 to 6:30 p.m. at the school (9111 116th St.), the carnival will feature a bunch of family-centred activities, such as face painting, bouncy castles and bubble soccer, plus food provided by the North Delta Lions Club.
"We are going to have quite a wide range of lawn games as well that people can participate in and win prizes, and then additionally there will also be a raffle," Delview Relay for Life committee co-chair Joshua Thoreson said.
There will also be a basketball tournament in the gym, open to the public, with on site sign-up and ad hoc teams.
So the community which people can participate in to win prizes that we have so far. So, yeah, that's kind of an overview of what the carnival is. There’s more specific aspects to it as well. We'll have a basketball tournament in the gym and things like that.”
While the event technically runs until 7 p.m., the relay's luminary ceremony starts at 6:30. Open to the public, the ceremony will feature speakers including local civic leaders and cancer survivors sharing their stories.
As of Wednesday morning, the school had raised $1,281.60 of its $10,000.00 goal, but the hope is to raise the bulk of the total at Tuesday's carnival.
