A third owner and another new plan for the former Kampe Estate on Green Avenue in Penticton is set to come before council on June 24.
The City sent out advanced notice June 12 of a rezoning and a development variance that will be up for review at the next council meeting.
The rezoning request is for 435 Green Avenue West, known for many years as the Kampe Estate, to allow for an extended care facility and staff housing.
In 2021, a proposal to build apartment buildings on the property was shot down twice by the council of the day after an organized effort from surrounding residents.
A new developer then bought the property, and toned down the amount of housing to 84 townhomes, which was approved by city council in 2022.
After approval from council was given for the rezoning, the structures on the property were demolished, and then it sat seemingly untouched.
In recent months, construction has begun, with loads of dirt currently filling the area.
Penticton's general manager of development services, Blake Laven, confirmed via email that the property had indeed been sold on to a new owner.
The new owners, Kaigo Seniors Living, are looking to have the zoning changed to allow for a higher density building.
The proposal would see a 200 bed long-term care facility built on the property, along with a 35-unit apartment building of staff housing.
"There will not be any townhouses as part of this new project, which utilizes the full site," said Laven.
The project was in fact announced back in September of 2024 by the provincial government, although it did not provide the location of the facility at the time.
Due to provincial legislation, there will not be a public hearing on the requested rezoning.
