New ‘Out of Control’ fire reported in Wells Gray Park on August 6 caused by lightning - 20 hectares

On August 6, 2023 a new out of control fire started in Wells Gray Park - listed as fire number: K22542 with lightning suspected to be the cause of this blaze.

On August 6, 2023 a new out of control fire started in Wells Gray Park - listed as fire number: K22542 with lightning suspected to be the cause of this blaze.

According to Kamloops Fire Centre as of August 7 at 5:35 p.m., this new Wells Gray Park fire is estimated now at over 20 hectares following a fly over conducted by BC Wildfire Service (BCWS) earlier in the day on Monday to assess the current fire status. The fire is located 1.6 km south of Pendleton Lakes.

The definition of an ‘Out of Control’ wildfire according to BCWS is at this stage, the wildfire is continuing to spread and is not responding to suppression efforts. In this case, BC Wildfire Service applies more aggressive suppression and control methods such as establishing control lines, burn-offs, dropping water, foam or retardant.
