Mayor Blackwell receives first poppy from legionnaire Wysoski

Mayor Merlin Blackwell received the first poppy in Clearwater on Oct. 22 which signifies the beginning of the annual Canadian Legion Poppy Campaign.

Pinning a poppy on a mayor in Canada is a way to mark the launch of the Royal Canadian Legion's annual Poppy Campaign.

The first poppy being given to the mayor can represent veterans and the community coming together to honour those who serve.

The Poppy Campaign runs from the last Friday of October until Remembrance Day on November 11. The Royal Canadian Legion distributes millions of poppies each year, which are worn by Canadians to show their respect. Poppies are distributed for free, but donations collected during the campaign support veterans and their families.
