The District of Lantzville wants to know what residents would like to see at a community gathering place in the village core.
This is the second time council has requested public feedback on amenities for the space in front of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 257, after it was also part of a village core improvement survey earlier this year.
During a council meeting on May 22, Coun. Ian Savage pointed to success with the previous survey, which suggested the district involve Seaview Elementary students. As a result, the proposed draft plan includes a vase-shaped planter containing sticks painted by Seaview students.
“This is simply to get more feedback directly on the plaza and then we will have a chance with the extra feedback we have to incorporate it in the design,” Savage told council. “Then I’d like to have it done up professionally, or at least more professional, with these new ideas and present it that way.”
The brick plaza in front of the Legion 257 building was first conceptualized as a community gathering space by the village improvement committee in late 2023.

The current proposal includes a log sign saying ‘Legion Plaza,’ red poppies, red tulips and a permanent Christmas tree that can be decorated seasonally. A ‘beach scene’ is planned to separate the plaza from the road and discourage small children from crossing the boundary of the space. This includes drought-resistant beach grasses, beach stones and driftwood.
Council is also looking into seating, with a number of bench options being considered.
Savage told the News Bulletin that a firm timeline hasn’t been established for construction, but he hopes for it to be ready during the summer.
“We so look forward to more resident input because all the people in Lantzville can come up with so many unique ideas it will be great to see what we can incorporate into the final plan,” he said.
The link for feedback is planned to be included in the next community update newsletter from the district and included on the district’s website at http://lantzville.ca.
