Orchard Gardens residents and staff were joined by B.C. Emergency Health Services, the Kelowna Fire Department and representatives from the Home Depot for the second annual WalkerThon on May 28, 2025.

It was Lao Tzu who said “A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.”

While residents of Orchard Gardens weren’t striding for that goal during the community’s second annual WalkerThon—their spirit and efforts were a thousand times appreciated.

“It’s near and dear to our hearts to raise money and give back to the community,” said Brett DeWitt, general manager, Orchard Gardens. “They worked hard their whole lives and they’re coming here, and being part of something like this to give back is very important for us.”

Dozens of residents made the 400 metre loop around their building several times on Wednesday (May 28) in support of the KGH Foundation.

“It’s a marvelous way of giving back to the community,” Doreen Zilkie noted. “KGH is one of my favourites."

Her walking partner, Diane Fletcher, agreed.

“Just to be part of this and enjoy it,” she added. “It’s an easy thing to do, and it’s appreciated.”

Residents’ families were invited to take part and support their loved ones as well.

B.C. Emergency Health Services, the Kelowna Fire Department and representatives from the Home Depot on Enterprise Way also participated in the event.

“Tim Horton’s helped us out as well,” DeWitt added. “It’s really exciting. “We’re building up every year.”

Other activities included a raffle, BBQ and entertainment. The event raised $2,600 for the KGH Foundation.

Orchard Gardens is part of Vancouver-based VRS Communities Society which also has other residences in the Okanagan, Shuswap, Lower Mainland, Vancouver Island and Alberta.
