Kelowna RCMP and Central Okanagan Search and Rescue (COSAR) were called in to search Mission Creek for a person who had gone missing, however, that report turned out to be false.
On Wednesday, May 28 around 5 p.m., RCMP and COSAR arrived at Casorso and Swamp Road after a witness reported seeing a woman described as approximately 20 years old, Caucasian, and wearing a dark blue shirt and dark shorts on the Mission Creek bridge.
According to police, two youths were going for a run in the area at the time of the reported incident. After seeing media reports on the situation, the father of the youth called RCMP, stating his daughters, who matched the description of one of the people who allegedly jumped off a bridge in the area, had actually jumped from the bridge down onto the trail to continue their run and were home safe.
"The RCMP would like to thank the two witnesses that had made the initial report and to COSAR for their continued efforts to search the creek over the past two days," stated Kelowna RCMP communications advisor Ryan Watters. "Police took this matter very seriously with several resources in the search including foot patrols, police boats, a drone and the RCMP helicopter flying both in the day and at night."
COSAR also confirmed the RCMP's statement on social media.
After Wednesday night's search, COSAR suspended its operations as it waited for more information to become available as no one was reported missing to the RCMP.
Officers remind the public to be diligent, especially by waterways.
"With the spring runoff continuing, water levels are very high and the currents are strong, making creeks and rivers very dangerous at this time of the year."
