The Regional District of Okanagan Similkameen will be hosting an information session in the new year on the referendum for residents outside Okanagan Falls who are on two private utility systems.

The Vintage Views Wastewater System and the Lakeshore Waterworks have been going through the process of being taken over by the RDOS after their owner approached the district in 2023.

Both systems require expensive upgrades to bring up to acceptable standards, which is expected to cost up to a combined $20.5 million between them.

Building permits have not been issued for new homes there due to issues with the wastewater system, which has led to fines from the Ministry of Environment.

In November, the RDOS board voted to go forward with the next steps towards acquring the system, which will be to hold a referendum in April to get approval from residents to borrow the funds for the upgrades.

An information session ahead of the vote is currently scheduled on Jan. 15 at the Okanagan Falls Community Centre from 6 p.m. until 7.
